I am about ready to tell my boss to fuck himself with a hot iron. I work directly under the ownership, and they went to lunch with a former consultant who I was asked to be nice to. They didnt complete their final tweaks to our corporate website as laid out in the contract and in 10 emails, and somehow convinced the owners it was my end that could have easily done the work. While true, it was in the contract for them to complete, and I didnt want to be liable for a fuck up as has happened in the past. (Oh well you guys were the last one in there, which is why everything failed).

My boss calls me to his office post lunch and asked me for a paper trail "so he knows who is lying to him", and then when I provided it he said it wasnt evidentary because there was so much back and forth. I signed a web development contract, somehow the burden of testing landed on my staff in house, and now I am thrown under the bus for another thing they didnt do. I want to say fuck it, take the last hour and change and go home and breathe, but the rage is upon me. I want to send a nasty email to all parties.

Should I rage it up or save it for 5 and drown myself in shitty beer, then come in tomorrow to deal with it sanely?

Cool off. Trust me. Dragging out the flame thrower as a knee-jerk reaction will probably only fracture stuff further and make your points seem less believable and more defensive/vindictive.

BTDT... as the guy having to decide which developers fucked up a roll out.

Best bet is to go through your documentation and highlight all of the "arrows" pointed away from you.

Go through the contract and the email convos. Clarify what you can and pare down the main part of it for the main points of your talk tomorrow. Have the rest of it ready to back up the paper trail. Not knowing your boss, I don't know if he's just swallowing their story b/c he doesn't know the difference, or if he's more interested in contracting things out instead of investing in his own people. Let it chill for a bit and put together the best defense you can.

I can't say how often this is happening to you or what your market is like but...

I have been in a similar situation before, my advice (if its really this big deal and you so desire to leave), cool off, clean up your resume, and find little ways to fuck them over AFTER you leave for something better.

My old company left me in charge of re-writing and re-building a software that maintained all the inventories and tracked customer repairs. Even though I insisted having other people be cross trained on it, they refused and made me the only person able to update the software. once they started screwing me over I made the system so complicated that I knew they would have to start from scratch once I left.

I left. It worked. They failed. Revenge is sweet.

Cool off before you send any emails. Even if it is such a clusterfuck that you are willing to bail on the company over it. If you leave, leave on good terms. There are very few things that are truly worth burning bridges over. And as satisfying as telling everyone to fuck off can be in the short term, the long term repercussions just aren't worth it.
